ABOUT

Becky Baumwoll is an NYC-based artist. She is fascinated by communication, inter-genre artmaking, and expression (playful, political, facial). Her artwork operates in ensemble structures, and oftentimes is the design and implementation of those structures themselves. As a Physical Storytelling Consultant, Becky works with choreographers, directors, and performers to clarify narrative, honing nonverbal communication while maintaining complexity and nuance.

Onstage, Becky has performed across the country with Broken Box Mime Theater, as well as regionally and Off-Broadway as an actor with words. She has directed projects small and large, from a US premiere of a Georgian play with Red Lab Productions to a Samsung commercial all about hands. Her works in theater often juxtapose intimate, tactile, quiet moments with large, playful, metaphorical ones. You can see her say a few lines in Succession, Season 2 Episode 2.

In 2011, Becky founded Broken Box Mime Theater (BKBX). She currently serves as BKBX's Artistic and Executive Director, as well as BKBX Education co-lead and performing company member. In 2023, she launched PhysFestNYC, a community-based, values-led festival for physical theaters. Her work with BKBX serves as an ongoing artistic home and beloved ensemble playspace.

As a teacher, Becky has developed curriculum with the International Rescue Committee, Arts Ignite, Opera on Tap, and Clowns Without Borders. She developed and taught three courses at the College of Performing Arts at The New School: Physical Storytelling, Languages of the Body, and The Whole Human Artist.  In 2022, Becky became an ITAC Innovator. Her Toolkit on Nonverbal Teaching Artistry can be found at itac-collaborative.com.

As a consultant with Arts Action Research, Becky works with arts nonprofits to self-define success and mindfully navigate arts leadership. Becky’s professional development continues primarily through Arts Action and the various accessibility, diversity, and leadership cohorts at A.R.T./New York.

Becky is a BRIClab Artist and NYC Women’s Fund grantee.
