Sugar Hill: The Ellington/Strayhorn Nutcracker
November 2023
New York, NY
SUGAR HILL reveals the glamour of the 1930s as seen through the lens of the nonconformist daughter of a high-society Black family in Manhattan and her fantastic dreamworld in the Sugar Hill neighborhood of Harlem. A jazz-steeped reimagining of the classic tale, this Nutcracker dance-story sends a stirring message that champions individuality and the journey to find the power of your unique self: “Go find what makes you different to find your magic.”
With a libretto and concept by Jessica Swan, this original production is directed with choreography by Emmy Award winner and Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics nominee Joshua Bergasse, and co-choreographed by Jade Hale-Christofi, with featured choreography by Jon Boogz and Caleb Teicher and choreographic consultation from Graciela Danielle. Orchestrations and Arrangements are by Grammy Award®-winner John Clayton and three-time Tony Award® nominee Larry Blank, Paul Masse (Dance Arranger), and Tripp Phillips (Production Stage Manager). When the Other Mary Celeste Sank: A Strange and Umweltian Tale at WP Theater
April 25 - 27, 2024
New York, NY
WHEN THE OTHER MARY CELESTE SANK: AN UMWELTIAN TALE is an anachronistic, theatrical fairy tale: after a shipwreck in 1894, five women are marooned on an island and must work together to survive in a strange, new world. As they hunt for food, battle insects and each other, and occasionally relish their unmoored reality (goodbye corsets!!!), the women also begin to develop sharper senses of self. By Amina Henry, Dir. Ran Xia.

TEACHING ARTIST
Becky was a 2022 ITAC Innovator. Her Think Tank, and subsequent working group, focused on the use of non-verbal Teaching Artistry. Her Think Tank title was: Physical Story, Modern Mime, and Teaching Beyond Words.
In the follow-up working group, Becky invited participants to join her in collectively developing and creating a suite of resources for nonverbal Teaching Artistry, and exploring how word-free engagement can be applied much more widely, in various art forms. This suite of resources will act as a practical guide, as well as include theory, history, and narrative surrounding the many implications and impacts of nonverbal storytelling.
